Israel and Lebanon Extend Ceasefire Despite New Strikes

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their current ceasefire and begin discussions aimed at reaching a broader political agreement, according to an announcement made by the United States on Friday, May 15, 2026. The extension of the truce is seen as an important step toward reducing tensions in the region after weeks of conflict and violence.

Despite the ceasefire extension, violence has continued. Israel launched new military strikes, saying the operations targeted threats not included under the ceasefire terms. This has raised concerns about the stability of the truce and whether both sides can maintain peace during negotiations.

In southern Lebanon, Lebanese state media reported that an Israeli airstrike hit a civil defense center early Saturday, May 16, 2026. At least six people were killed in the attack, including three medics who were working at the site. Another 22 people were reported injured. The strike has increased fears of further escalation and has drawn criticism due to the civilian casualties.

At the same time, regional diplomacy involving Iran and major world powers continues. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he has received messages from the United States indicating a willingness to continue diplomatic talks. He stated that Iran remains open to international support for peaceful dialogue, including possible assistance from China.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping had offered help in reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route. Trump also stated that China had pledged not to send military equipment to Iran during its ongoing tensions with the United States and Israel.

These developments show the complex nature of Middle East diplomacy, where ceasefire efforts, military actions, and international negotiations are all unfolding at the same time. While hopes for peace remain, the situation continues to be fragile and highly unpredictable.
