Gavaskar Optimistic About PBKS Playoff Hopes Despite Six Straight Losses

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 18 (ANI): After Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered their sixth consecutive loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed optimism about their playoff chances. He noted that Rajasthan Royals (RR) have been performing poorly and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face tough upcoming matches.

Once on a winning streak with seven straight wins, PBKS’ campaign has unraveled due to weaknesses in both batting and bowling. Currently fourth with 13 points, they need to win their final match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to reach 15 points for a chance to qualify for the playoffs.

Their rivals for the fourth spot—CSK, RR, and KKR—have their own challenges. If CSK loses one of their remaining games and PBKS wins theirs, they could secure a playoff spot.

Speaking on Star Sports’ ‘Cricket Live,’ Gavaskar explained that if Rajasthan continues to underperform and Punjab secures their final match win, they will likely qualify for the playoffs.

In their recent match against RCB, PBKS chose to bowl first. Jacob Bethell took an early wicket, but Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal scored a strong partnership. Venkatesh Iyer and Tim David further boosted RCB’s score to 222/4.

During the chase, PBKS lost key players quickly in their top order. Despite contributions from Connolly and Suryansh Shedge, they struggled to recover. Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh briefly turned things around with a strong partnership but ultimately fell short, losing by 23 runs.

RCB secured their playoff spot with nine wins and four losses, topping the table with 18 points.
