Assam Flood Crisis Worsens

The flood situation in Assam grew more severe on Wednesday (August 5, 2026). Heavy overnight rains have raised fears of new flooding in areas prone to floods. The death toll has reached 89, and over 122,100 people across five districts are affected.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda is set to visit flood-affected regions to evaluate the situation and discuss relief efforts with state officials. According to Assam’s disaster management authority, the Dhansiri river near Numaligarh in Golaghat district is still dangerously high.

Residents have been warned to stay away from the river as water levels continue to rise. Two more lives were lost in the past day—one each in Sivasagar and Golaghat districts—increasing this year’s flood-related deaths to 89.

Relief efforts are ongoing, with medical teams assisting affected areas. Over 17,000 displaced people are staying in 55 relief camps set up across four districts. Floodwaters have submerged over 15,000 hectares of farmland and impacted more than 26,000 animals.

The floods have caused significant damage to embankments, roads, homes, schools, and other public infrastructure across the state.
