Karnataka Aims to Create Pioneering Women’s Health Policy Focused on Menopause

The Karnataka government is preparing to introduce a new health policy focused entirely on women’s health. One of the main highlights of the proposed policy is special attention to menopause, a stage in a woman’s life that has often received limited focus in public healthcare.

Government officials believe that women’s health issues are currently covered under the general healthcare system, which may not fully address the specific medical needs of women. The new policy aims to fill this gap by providing dedicated healthcare services and support for women at different stages of their lives.

A major focus of the policy will be menopause, which usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. During this period, women experience natural hormonal changes that can lead to symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, sleep problems, fatigue, joint pain, and reduced bone strength. Many women also face emotional and mental health challenges during this stage.

The Karnataka government plans to improve awareness about menopause and ensure that women receive proper medical advice, counselling, and treatment when needed. The policy is expected to encourage women to seek medical help without hesitation and reduce the stigma surrounding menopause and other women’s health issues.

Officials are also considering measures to strengthen healthcare services in government hospitals and primary health centres. Doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers may receive additional training to identify and manage menopause-related health conditions more effectively.

The proposed policy is expected to include regular health check-ups, screening programmes, counselling services, nutritional guidance, and awareness campaigns. It may also focus on preventing diseases that commonly affect women after menopause, such as osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Apart from menopause, the policy is likely to address women’s health throughout their lives, including menstrual health, reproductive health, pregnancy care, mental health, nutrition, and healthy ageing. The government aims to create a comprehensive healthcare system that supports women from adolescence to old age.

Health experts have welcomed the initiative, saying that women often ignore their own health while taking care of their families. They believe that a dedicated women’s health policy will encourage early diagnosis, timely treatment, and better overall health outcomes.

The government is expected to consult doctors, public health experts, women’s organizations, and other stakeholders before finalizing the policy. Their suggestions will help shape programmes that meet the real healthcare needs of women across both urban and rural areas of Karnataka.

If implemented successfully, the policy could become one of the first state-level initiatives in India to give special importance to menopause and women’s long-term health. The Karnataka government hopes that the new policy will improve the quality of healthcare for women and ensure they receive the care, respect, and support they need throughout every stage of life.
