Ireland Misses Direct Path to 2027 ODI World Cup

Bready [UK], August 6 (ANI): Ireland’s chance to qualify directly for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup ended after their first match against Afghanistan was canceled due to heavy rain. The washout meant Ireland could not improve their ranking in time for the September 30, 2026, deadline.

Ireland, ranked 12th in ODI rankings, needed a perfect series win against Afghanistan and relied on other teams’ results to qualify directly. However, with this possibility now gone, they must compete in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

The Qualifier will feature two Full Member nations (excluding South Africa and Zimbabwe) and top-four teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2. The winner of the Qualifier gets a direct spot in the 12-team World Cup. Teams finishing second, third, or fourth advance to the World Cup Super Series for a chance to join the main tournament.

The qualification process starts with the Challenge League, where 12 teams compete in groups. The top two from each group move to the Playoff, and the top four from there join the Qualifier.

Ireland hopes to avoid repeating their 2023 disappointment, when they missed the World Cup after being eliminated in the Super Six stage of the Qualifier. (ANI)
