Fresh Probe Ordered in R.G. Kar Case

The West Bengal government has announced a fresh investigation into the 2024 rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The decision was announced on August 9, 2026, following a request from the victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath, who is now a BJP MLA.

The case has remained a major issue in West Bengal and has faced strong public attention since the incident. Questions have also been raised about how the investigation was handled by authorities.

Fresh Investigation Announced

According to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the decision to launch a new investigation was taken after discussions with senior government officials and legal and other experts.

The new probe will be conducted under the Special Commission Act, 1952. The government says the investigation will examine the case and look into whether officials properly followed their responsibilities.

Questions Over Police Investigation

Adhikari alleged that the police did not perform their duties properly during the earlier handling of the case. He said the new investigation would examine whether there were failures or mistakes by officials.

The government wants to find out whether important procedures were followed correctly and whether any mistakes affected the handling of the case.

Cremation Also Under Investigation

The government has also ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the victim’s cremation.

Officials will examine whether there were any irregularities or mistakes during the process. Adhikari said that if any person is found responsible for wrongdoing, action will be taken immediately.

Family Seeks Answers

The fresh probe follows the victim’s mother’s request for another investigation. The family has continued to seek answers and accountability over the circumstances surrounding the death and the way the case was handled.

The decision has brought renewed attention to the case and to questions about whether all aspects of the incident were properly investigated.

Case Remains a Major Issue

The R.G. Kar case has had a major impact on public debate in West Bengal. It has raised concerns about women’s safety, the protection of medical professionals and the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies.

The case also led to wider discussions about how authorities should respond to serious crimes and how victims’ families should be treated during investigations.

The new investigation is expected to examine the earlier handling of the case, including the police response and the cremation process. The government has said that anyone found responsible for mistakes or wrongdoing will face action.

The fresh probe could therefore become an important step in addressing the concerns raised by the victim’s family and the wider public.
