India Drops Sai Sudharsan for Sri Lanka Tests; BCCI Names Replacement

India’s Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka has received a late change. Young batter Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of the series because of a toe injury. The BCCI has selected Sarfaraz Khan as his replacement.

The announcement was made on Sunday, August 9. Sarfaraz’s return gives India another experienced batter as the team prepares for an important overseas Test assignment.

Sudharsan Ruled Out

Sai Sudharsan was expected to be part of India’s batting plans for the Sri Lanka series. However, he has been unable to recover fully from his injury and will miss both Tests. Reports said he was dealing with a stress reaction in his right toe.

His absence is a setback for India because he had been developing into an important option in the top order.

Sarfaraz Gets Another Chance

Sarfaraz Khan has now been called back into the Test squad. The Mumbai batter has already represented India in Test cricket and will provide additional experience to the batting group.

His ability to play spin could also be useful in Sri Lankan conditions, where pitches can often assist spin bowling.

However, his selection does not necessarily mean he will be included in the playing XI. The team management will decide the final combination based on the pitch, conditions and the form of other batters.

First Test in Galle

The first Test between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle. The series will be India’s first major Test assignment of the 2026-27 season.

Playing in Sri Lanka can be challenging because the conditions may favour spin as the match progresses. India’s batters will therefore need to be patient and adapt to the conditions.

Competition for Batting Spots

Sudharsan’s absence has opened up another opportunity for India’s other batters. Sarfaraz will now be part of the competition for a place in the middle order.

India’s team management will have several options before finalising the playing XI. The decision could depend on the pitch conditions in Galle and the performances of the players during preparation.

Important Opportunity for Sarfaraz

For Sarfaraz, the call-up is an important opportunity to return to the Indian Test setup. He will be hoping to make the most of his chance and strengthen his position in the team.

India will also want its batting unit to perform consistently throughout the series. With the first Test only days away, the team is now preparing for a challenging contest against Sri Lanka.

The late change has added another interesting element to the series, with Sarfaraz getting an unexpected opportunity after Sudharsan’s injury.
