Dolphins Coach Embraces Mistakes in Training Camp

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Jeff Hafley, the new Miami Dolphins head coach, believes mistakes can help his young team grow. While he wants his players to avoid errors during games, he encourages them to push beyond their comfort zones during training camp, even if it means making mistakes.

Hafley explained, “Some guys get too comfortable and are afraid to make mistakes. But how do you improve if you play it safe? It’s not about avoiding mistakes; it’s about learning.” He has tried new strategies in practice, like experimenting with snap counts for quarterbacks and allowing pre-snap penalties early on. He also wants players to try different techniques and see what works best for them.

During a recent practice, Hafley encouraged a cornerback to use his hands and length more during drills. He told the player, “Step out of your comfort zone. Don’t worry about the results. That’s why we have practice—to learn and improve.”

Hafley gets frustrated in practice when players hesitate or make mistakes but focuses on teaching them instead of just yelling. He said, “If a player isn’t making an effort or showing physicality, then I’ll yell at him. But I want to help them understand what went wrong and how to fix it.”

This week, the Dolphins are preparing for a joint practice with Washington ahead of their preseason opener. Hafley hasn’t announced if starting players like Malik Willis or De’Von Achane will play, but he emphasized that everyone on the team needs to be ready.

The Dolphins also made moves Monday, acquiring offensive tackle Caedan Wallace from the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round pick. Wallace has played in 10 games over the past two seasons. Additionally, they placed kicker Zane Gonzalez on injured reserve and signed cornerback Nick McCloud to address injuries in their secondary.
