Shubman Gill Aims for WTC Records Against Sri Lanka
India captain Shubman Gill has a chance to achieve several major records during the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The series begins on August 15 and is an important part of the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
Gill has already been one of India’s leading batters in the WTC. He currently has 2,843 runs from 73 innings, with an average of 43.07. He needs only 157 more runs to become the first Indian batter to score 3,000 runs in WTC history.
Gill Nears 1,000 Runs as Captain
Gill is also close to another major achievement. He needs just 50 more runs to become the first Indian captain to score 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle.
He has already scored 950 runs in 14 innings during the current cycle, averaging an impressive 79.16. Former India captain Virat Kohli came close to the same mark in the first WTC cycle, when he scored 934 runs.
Reaching 1,000 runs would be a major achievement for Gill, especially because he is leading India in an important WTC campaign.
Chance to Join Elite Indian Batters
Gill also has an opportunity to join a select group of Indian batters who have scored more than 1,000 runs in one WTC cycle.
Yashasvi Jaiswal leads the Indian list with 1,798 runs, while Ajinkya Rahane scored 1,159 and Rohit Sharma scored 1,094 in earlier WTC cycles.
Gill previously came close to the milestone, scoring 972 runs in the previous WTC cycle. He will now have another opportunity to reach the mark.
Injury Concern Before Sri Lanka Tests
Gill recently faced a finger injury during India’s practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. However, he showed good form with a score of 44 runs.
His fitness will remain an important point for India ahead of the first Test. Gill’s leadership and batting will be especially important as India look to collect valuable WTC points.
Important Test Series for India
The first Test between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle, while the second Test will be played from August 23 in Colombo.
The two matches are important for both teams because every WTC Test can affect their chances of reaching the final.
