Afghanistan Hosts India for September T20I Series
India and Afghanistan are set to play a three-match T20I series in September 2026. All three matches will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, giving Indian fans an opportunity to watch the two teams compete in a short bilateral series.
The first T20I is scheduled for September 13, followed by the second match on September 15. The final game of the series will be played on September 17.
Part of Afghanistan’s Future Tours Programme
The series is part of Afghanistan’s Future Tours Programme and will add another chapter to the growing cricket relationship between India and Afghanistan.
The two teams have developed a strong rivalry in recent years, particularly in limited-overs cricket. Their matches have attracted considerable attention because Afghanistan has developed into a competitive international side, while India remains one of the strongest teams in world cricket.
Earlier in 2026, India hosted Afghanistan for a Test and ODI series. India performed strongly and won the series convincingly.
India Helps Afghanistan Host Matches
Because of political and security difficulties in Afghanistan, the country has often played its home matches at venues outside Afghanistan. India has provided support by allowing Afghanistan to use Indian grounds for international cricket.
The upcoming T20I series in New Delhi is another example of this arrangement. Playing in India also gives Afghanistan access to high-quality facilities and allows the team to continue hosting international matches despite challenges at home.
BCCI Supports Afghanistan Cricket
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has expressed support for the Afghanistan Cricket Board and welcomed the continued cricketing relationship between the two countries.
He highlighted the importance of regular bilateral matches and said that these engagements have helped strengthen the relationship between the two cricket teams.
Afghanistan has also made significant progress in international cricket in recent years. Its rise has produced several talented players who have become well known in T20 cricket around the world.
India Dominates T20I Record
India and Afghanistan have played nine T20I matches against each other so far.
India has won eight matches, while one game was abandoned. Afghanistan is still waiting for its first T20I victory against India.
Their most recent meeting came during the 2024 T20 World Cup, when India defeated Afghanistan by 47 runs.
Afghanistan will therefore enter the upcoming series hoping to improve its record against India and create history by securing its first T20I win over the team.
Three Matches in Five Days
The closely scheduled series will give both teams an opportunity to test their players and prepare for future international competitions.
With matches on September 13, 15, and 17, the series will also provide an important test of the players’ fitness and ability to perform in quick succession.
