Bangladesh Halts PM’s India Visit Until Hasina Extradition

Bangladesh announced on August 16, 2026, that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not visit India until New Delhi extradites Sheikh Hasina, the former Bangladeshi prime minister who fled the country during a 2024 uprising. Relations between Bangladesh and India have been tense since Ms. Hasina’s government was overthrown, leading her to seek refuge in India.

Hasina faces the death penalty in Bangladesh after being convicted of crimes against humanity. Dhaka has repeatedly requested her extradition from India.

Foreign Ministry official A.K.M. Shahidul Karim clarified that speculation about Rahman visiting India soon was unfounded. He emphasized the need for a favorable environment for such a visit, urging Indian authorities to expedite the extradition process. India has stated that the request is under review.

Rahman, who took office in February, has visited Malaysia and China, breaking the tradition of Bangladeshi leaders visiting India first. India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, met with Rahman last week, sparking speculation about potential progress in relations.

Karim noted that discussions between officials from both countries regarding a possible visit have been affected by Hasina’s media interactions despite her conviction.

Hasina, a former pro-democracy leader who critics say became increasingly authoritarian during her 15-year rule, recently vowed to return to Bangladesh in December, even if it means imprisonment.

Bangladesh plans to pursue a “Bangladesh First” foreign policy, focusing on sovereignty and non-interference while seeking mutually beneficial ties with India and other nations.
