Southern Railway Plans New Path for Chromepet Access

The Southern Railway, along with the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), has proposed a new pathway to connect the Radha Nagar subway with Chromepet railway station. The project is aimed at making travel safer and easier for passengers coming from the Radha Nagar side.

The proposal comes after concerns were raised about the lack of a proper and safe route for passengers to reach the railway platforms. A recent news report highlighted the difficulties faced by people using the Radha Nagar subway to access Chromepet station.

The Radha Nagar subway is located about 120 metres from Chromepet railway station. Although footpaths are available on both sides of the subway, there is currently no direct pathway connecting the subway to the railway platforms.

Because of this, passengers may have to take longer routes to reach the station. This can be particularly difficult for elderly people, children and passengers carrying luggage.

Railway officials have explained that creating a pathway directly along the railway tracks would not be a safe solution. The proposed route would have to pass between the suburban and fast railway lines, creating serious safety risks for passengers.

Officials also pointed out that railway tracks are busy areas where trains move at high speeds. Allowing passengers to walk close to the tracks could increase the possibility of accidents.

The issue was also brought before the Madras High Court. The court directed the authorities to consider the matter and take appropriate action according to the law.

Following the concerns, Southern Railway and CUMTA have been looking at possible alternatives that can provide passengers with safe access without interfering with railway operations.

The proposed pathway could make the journey easier for people living in and around Radha Nagar. It could also reduce the need for passengers to take longer routes to enter Chromepet station.

Safety will remain the main priority while planning the new connection. Officials will need to consider the movement of trains, pedestrian traffic and the existing railway infrastructure before finalising the design.

The project also highlights the importance of providing proper pedestrian connections around railway stations. As the number of passengers using suburban trains continues to grow, safe access routes can help reduce confusion and improve the overall travel experience.

Authorities are expected to continue discussions and examine the feasibility of the proposed pathway. Once a suitable plan is finalised, further steps can be taken to improve connectivity between the Radha Nagar subway and Chromepet railway station.

The proposed project could provide a much-needed solution for passengers while ensuring that railway safety rules are followed.
