A Village Betrayed: Why Siddapur Eco-Town Project Has Left Residents Worrying
Residents of Siddapur village in the Kothur mandal of Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district have raised concerns about a proposed Eco-Town waste processing project near their village. People came to know about the plan on May 26, and many residents are now worried about its possible impact on their daily lives, environment and livelihoods.
The proposed project is expected to be based on the waste management system followed in Kitakyushu, Japan. The idea is to process waste in a more organized and environmentally friendly way. The project is part of efforts to improve waste management and reduce the amount of waste sent to dumping grounds.
The proposal was first discussed on May 19 during a Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 review meeting in New Delhi. Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka spoke about the state’s efforts to introduce decentralized waste management systems.
The proposed system is also linked to the upcoming Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which are being prepared by the central government. The aim is to improve the way waste is collected, separated, processed and disposed of.
However, the announcement has created concern among people living in Siddapur. Residents are worried that a large waste processing facility close to the village could affect the local environment. They are particularly concerned about possible problems related to air quality, water pollution, waste transportation and unpleasant smells.
People also fear that the project could affect their agricultural activities and livelihoods if the facility is built too close to residential and farming areas. Residents want more information about the exact location of the project, the technology that will be used and the safety measures that will be followed.
The local community is also expected to seek clarification from government officials before the project moves forward. Residents want authorities to clearly explain how the facility will operate and what steps will be taken to protect nearby homes, farmland and natural resources.
The Eco-Town proposal is part of a larger effort to improve waste management in Telangana. While better waste processing can help cities and villages manage growing amounts of waste, local residents say development should not come at the cost of their health, environment or livelihoods.
As discussions continue, Siddapur residents are closely watching the government’s next steps. They are seeking greater transparency, proper environmental safeguards and consultation with the local community before any major construction begins.
