IND vs SL, 1st Test: Why TV umpire Ahsan Raza is officiating on-field on Day 3?

Ahsan Raza took over as an on-field umpire during Day 3 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium on Monday. The change was made after Australian umpire Rod Tucker fell ill and was unable to continue his duties.

The match organizers announced the change before the start of the third day’s play. Raza, who had been working as the television umpire during the match, was moved onto the field to replace Tucker.

Tucker had been officiating the Test alongside Sharfuddoula Saikat of Bangladesh. The match began on August 15, with Tucker serving as one of the two on-field umpires.

According to reports, Tucker had already been unable to take part in the final session of Day 2 because he was feeling unwell. After his condition did not allow him to return for Day 3, the organizers decided to make the temporary change.

Ahsan Raza was already part of the match officials’ team, making the change easier to arrange. He had been responsible for reviewing decisions from the television umpire’s position before moving onto the field.

Andy Pycroft continued in his role as the match referee for the Test. The match officials are responsible for ensuring that the game is played according to the rules and that decisions are made fairly.

Tucker is a well-known former Australian cricketer who has worked as an international umpire for many years. His absence is due to illness and is not related to any decision made during the match.

The change in umpiring arrangements did not stop the Test from continuing. Players from both India and Sri Lanka continued their battle on the field as planned.

Raza’s experience as an international umpire is expected to help ensure that the match continues smoothly. He will work alongside Sharfuddoula Saikat for the remainder of the day’s play, while the match officials will continue to monitor Tucker’s condition.

The temporary change highlights the importance of having a full team of match officials available during international cricket matches. With the Test still in progress, the officials will play an important role in ensuring that the game is conducted fairly and without unnecessary interruptions.
