India’s Commerce Minister Invites Japanese Businesses to Boost Investment
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has called for stronger business cooperation between India and Japan. He encouraged Japanese companies to increase their investments and build more partnerships in India during a meeting with a Japanese business delegation in New Delhi.
Goyal said that India and Japan have a strong and long-standing relationship. He said both countries share common goals related to peace, economic growth and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
The minister welcomed the visit of the Japanese delegation and said it showed the growing importance of the relationship between the two countries. He noted that cooperation between India and Japan is expanding beyond major cities and is reaching different states and regions across India.
According to Goyal, trade between India and Japan reached $27.5 billion in the financial year 2025-26. Japan has also become one of the major foreign investors in India and is currently the fifth-largest source of foreign direct investment in the country.
Several major infrastructure projects show the growing cooperation between the two nations. One of the most important projects is the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, which is being developed with Japanese support.
Japan has also supported metro projects in several Indian cities, including Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Chennai. These projects have helped strengthen cooperation in transport and urban infrastructure.
Another important part of the partnership is the development of Japanese industrial townships in India. So far, 11 Japanese industrial townships have been established across eight Indian states. These areas are designed to support Japanese companies and encourage investment and manufacturing in India.
Goyal said India offers Japanese businesses many opportunities because of its large market, growing economy and expanding manufacturing sector. He encouraged Japanese companies to explore new areas of investment and work more closely with Indian businesses.
The two countries are also working together in areas such as technology, manufacturing, infrastructure and supply chains. Stronger cooperation in these sectors could create new jobs and support economic growth in both countries.
India hopes to attract more Japanese investment in the coming years. At the same time, Japanese companies are looking at India as an important market and a possible manufacturing and business hub.
The growing partnership between India and Japan shows how economic cooperation can strengthen wider relations between the two countries. With more investment and joint projects, the relationship is expected to become even stronger in the future.
