Imran Khan Sent Back to Jail After Hospital Visit

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was sent back to jail on Friday (August 21, 2026) after being taken to a hospital for medical checks ordered by the court. The government announced that he was moved back to Adiala Jail following his visit to the public Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

The Supreme Court had earlier ruled on Tuesday (August 18) that Khan, Pakistan’s most popular politician, be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for treatment. This decision came after his lawyers raised concerns about his health. However, the government claimed security issues at Shifa led them to take him instead to PIMS.

A team of doctors, including specialists in eye care, heart issues, and general medicine, examined Khan at PIMS. They found him fit enough for jail. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that Khan’s sister, a doctor, was present during the examination.

Hundreds of police were deployed near Shifa Hospital on Thursday (August 20) to manage crowds of Khan’s supporters. The court had warned against using Khan’s health situation for political purposes or allowing large gatherings at the hospital.

Khan, who led Pakistan to cricket victory in 1992 and served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, has faced legal issues since his removal. He denies corruption charges, calling them politically motivated. His arrest last year caused widespread protests.

Despite being a beloved leader, Khan’s government struggled with economic challenges, including high inflation and a weak currency. His political career marked a shift from Pakistan’s traditional ruling families but failed to improve the economy significantly.
