Kharge urges Centre to aid flood-hit Nepal, ensure safety of stranded Indians

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking the government to help flood-affected Nepal and protect Indian nationals stuck there. In his letter dated August 28 but released on August 29, 2026, Kharge expressed deep concern over the devastation caused by floods in Nepal, which have reportedly killed more than 600 people and left thousands missing. Many are now in urgent need of food, medicine, shelter, and other essentials.

Kharge requested Modi to provide immediate humanitarian aid to Nepal’s affected population in coordination with the Nepalese government. He also highlighted the plight of Indian nationals stranded due to the floods, urging the Centre to step up rescue operations and arrange for their safe return to India.

Referring to information from the Ministry of External Affairs, Kharge mentioned that around 320 Indian nationals are still uncontactable in Nepal. He called for immediate assistance to ensure their safety.

In a separate letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, Kharge asked the government to provide “immediate and comprehensive” disaster relief to Nepal, emphasizing the strong ties between the two nations. He suggested deploying National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, in coordination with Nepal’s government, to assist in rescue, evacuation, and relief efforts.

Kharge stressed that NDRF’s expertise could be crucial in saving lives and providing urgent relief. He urged the Home Ministry to handle the situation with “urgency and sensitivity.”
