India’s Investment Appeal in Chicago
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman spoke about India’s investment potential while addressing a Business Roundtable in Chicago. She highlighted that global companies looking to restructure their supply chains and investments should consider India due to its large market size, long-term opportunities, and strong economic foundation.
India offers a unique combination of scale, sustained growth, skilled talent, advanced infrastructure, technology, and consistent reforms. The focus of the meeting was on manufacturing, AI, digital services, infrastructure, food processing, defense, and advanced technologies. Sitharaman emphasized that India’s digital platforms, such as Aadhaar, UPI, and DigiLocker, are creating large-scale opportunities for businesses.
She also noted that India is emerging as a hub for global innovation, particularly in areas like AI, engineering, analytics, and semiconductors. The GIFT IFSC in Gujarat is becoming an international financial center, connecting global investors with Indian opportunities.
India’s domestic market combined with its globally competitive manufacturing capabilities makes it attractive for companies looking to expand beyond assembly to more advanced manufacturing. Initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) and iDEX are strengthening domestic capabilities in drones, autonomous systems, and advanced technologies.
Sitharaman urged global partners to view India not just as a market but as a platform for building products and services for the world. The event was organized by the Consulate General of India in Chicago with the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum.
