Xi Jinping and Putin Discuss Visa-Free Travel and Global Issues in Bishkek

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek on August 31, 2026. They discussed plans to create a visa-free system for travel between China and Russia and exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern.

The leaders met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit taking place in Bishkek.

Putin stated that Russia is willing to work with China to make the visa-free arrangement permanent, provided China finds it feasible. He mentioned that this policy has already boosted tourism between the two countries by 43% in the first half of 2026.

On December 1, 2025, Putin signed a decree allowing Chinese citizens to visit Russia without a visa for up to 30 days until September 14, 2026. This was done as part of a reciprocal agreement. Earlier, China had implemented a similar policy for Russian citizens.

Both countries have since extended this visa-free privilege through the end of 2027.

Xi Jinping emphasized that under their joint leadership, China-Russia relations will grow stronger and more stable. He noted that despite global uncertainties, people worldwide still seek peace, development, cooperation, and mutual benefits. The leaders committed to working together to achieve these goals.
