Nepal Flash Floods Toll Rises
The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 1,222, while more than 4,000 people are still missing one week after the disaster. The floods caused widespread destruction across eight districts, damaging towns, villages, roads and other important infrastructure.
Security forces have been carrying out search and rescue operations in several affected areas. Many bodies have been recovered from different districts as rescue teams continue to search for missing people.
The highest number of deaths has been reported in Chitawan, where 348 bodies have been recovered. Nawalparasi East has reported 218 deaths, while Nawalparasi West has recorded 208 deaths. Another 155 people have died in Nuwakot.
Other affected districts have also reported a large number of casualties. Rasuwa has recorded 127 deaths, followed by Gorkha with 69, Dhading with 60, and Tanahu with 38.
Authorities are particularly concerned about the thousands of people who remain missing. Among those reported missing are 583 foreign nationals, adding another challenge to the ongoing rescue and recovery operations.
Security forces have so far rescued 11,993 people from flooded and dangerous areas. Helicopters have been used to reach people trapped in remote locations, while ground teams have also been working in areas that can be reached by road.
More than 21,000 soldiers and police personnel are involved in the search and rescue operation. They are working across several districts to find survivors, recover bodies and provide assistance to affected communities.
The scale of the disaster has made rescue operations difficult. Floodwaters, damaged roads and difficult terrain have created major challenges for emergency teams trying to reach remote villages.
The disaster has also affected areas across the border in China. In Gyirong county in Tibet, the death toll has increased to 21, while another 541 people remain missing.
The continuing search operations in both Nepal and Tibet highlight the serious impact of the floods. Families are still waiting for information about their missing relatives, while thousands of survivors are in need of shelter, food and other essential support.
Authorities and security forces are expected to continue rescue and recovery operations in the coming days. The focus remains on finding missing people, helping survivors and assessing the full extent of the damage caused by the floods.
