PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi on India’s Ireland Defeat Amid Pakistan’s Test Crisis

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently brought up India’s surprising loss to Ireland earlier this year while addressing Pakistan’s recent defeats in the Test series against England. Pakistan lost both of the first two Tests by large margins, leading to the PCB sending seven players home and dismissing their coaching staff, including head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul. Mike Hesson has taken over as the new coach for the upcoming third Test.

Naqvi questioned the significance of high-profile defeats in international cricket, pointing out that South Africa’s loss to Namibia and India’s defeat by Ireland haven’t ended their cricket programs. He emphasized that Pakistan will continue to bring in new talent or strategies whenever necessary, especially when players or coaches aren’t performing well.

Despite facing criticism, Naqvi remains confident about Pakistan’s future in Test cricket. He acknowledged the losses but believes progress is possible, referencing Pakistan’s improvement in ODIs and T20Is under his leadership. The team has risen from eighth to fifth place in ODIs and from ninth to sixth in T20Is.

Currently, Pakistan is struggling at the bottom of the World Test Championship standings with only 16 points and a low points percentage. They aim to avoid a series clean sweep when they face England in the third Test starting on September 9th. Pakistan hasn’t won an ICC trophy since 2017’s Champions Trophy under Sarfaraz Ahmed, and earlier this year, they were eliminated early in the T20 World Cup.
