Hundreds of Students Flee After Hostel Collapse

Several students left Satya Niketan in Delhi late on September 6, 2026, after a nearby hostel building collapsed. Many students were so frightened that they left their accommodation immediately, carrying suitcases, bags and whatever belongings they could take with them.

Some students were still wearing their nightclothes when they left. The sudden collapse created panic in the area, and many students did not feel safe staying inside their hostels or rented rooms.

Students Struggle After the Collapse

Anushriti, from Kanpur, decided to stay with a friend after the incident. She was unable to return to her accommodation or collect all her belongings. The collapse was especially frightening because the impact shook her own building.

The incident left her deeply disturbed. Like many other students, she was worried about whether the building where she was staying was safe and whether another structure could collapse.

Another student, Pragya, had moved to Satya Niketan only about a month earlier. After the collapse, she went to her cousin’s home in Chirag Gali.

Pragya said the situation was extremely difficult to handle. The sound of emergency vehicles and sirens, along with the confusion in the area, made her feel overwhelmed. She became emotional when she saw her sister and struggled to control her tears.

Students Leave Hostels During the Night

Unnayan, another student living in the area, left for a friend’s house late at night. He was afraid that another building could collapse and did not feel comfortable staying in his hostel.

The fear also affected his sleep. Unable to rest properly after the incident, he eventually decided that leaving the hostel was the safest option.

Hundreds of other students also left Satya Niketan that night. Some returned to their family homes, while others stayed with relatives, friends or classmates.

Students who did not have anywhere to go asked other students for help. Fellow students opened their homes and shared whatever space they had available.

Temporary Shelters Arranged

As many students were suddenly left without accommodation, temporary arrangements were made to help them. College classrooms and hostel buildings were used as temporary shelters for students who needed a safe place to stay.

Students and educational institutions also helped each other by arranging food, sleeping spaces and other basic support.

For many students, however, the biggest concern remains the safety of the buildings where they normally live.

Students Wait for Safety Checks

Students are now waiting for officials to carry out safety inspections of hostels and other buildings in the area. Many say they will not feel comfortable returning until they receive confirmation that their accommodation is safe.

The incident has raised concerns about the condition of buildings used by students in areas where many young people live in rented rooms and hostels.

Students and their families are now asking authorities to carry out proper inspections and take action if any building is found to be unsafe.

For the students of Satya Niketan, the collapse has turned what was once a familiar place to live and study into an area filled with fear and uncertainty. Many are hoping that proper safety checks will be completed soon so they can return without worrying about their lives.
