New Assembly-Secretariat Complex Coming to Pattinapakkam
The Tamil Nadu government has approved plans to construct a new integrated Assembly and Secretariat complex at Pattinapakkam, also known as Foreshore Estate, in Chennai. The proposed facility is expected to bring the Legislative Assembly and Secretariat offices together in a modern and spacious campus.
The new complex will be built on around 25.55 acres of land and is expected to cover nearly 20 lakh square feet. The project is estimated to cost around ₹1,200 crore. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been asked to prepare and submit a detailed project report within three months.
The announcement for the new integrated complex was made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on September 3. The proposed project is aimed at creating better facilities for the functioning of the Assembly and government offices.
At present, the Tamil Nadu Assembly and Secretariat function from the Fort St. George campus in Chennai. The historic campus has been used for government administration for more than a century. The government believes that a new and modern complex will provide improved infrastructure and better working facilities.
The land identified for the project has been collected from different government agencies. Around 21.76 acres have been identified from the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, while 0.93 acres will come from the Greater Chennai Corporation. Another 1.73 acres has been identified from the Revenue Department, along with 1.13 acres from the Tamil Nadu Housing Board. The proposed site is located in the Mylapore area.
The government has also created three committees to help plan and execute the project. One committee will be responsible for selecting suitable architectural firms. A second committee will examine the preliminary designs, while the third committee will work on finalising the detailed designs for the complex.
According to the government, the required permissions and no-objection certificates from the relevant authorities have also been obtained. The next major step will be the preparation of the detailed project report and further planning for construction.
The proposed Assembly-Secretariat complex is expected to become an important government infrastructure project in Chennai. If completed as planned, it could provide modern facilities for legislators, government officials and staff while creating a dedicated space for the state’s administrative and legislative activities.
