IPL 2027 Auction Returning to India

The Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction for 2027 may take place in India once again, marking its return to the country after being held overseas in recent years. The last time the IPL auction was in India was before the 2023 season, hosted in Kochi in December 2022. Since then, the auctions have been held in Dubai (2024), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2025), and Abu Dhabi (2026).

According to a report from Cricbuzz, the 2027 IPL auction is expected to follow the usual timing in mid-December. The report also mentions that while the mini-auction for 2027 will be held in India, future mega-auctions might again take place abroad.

All ten IPL franchises have reportedly been assured by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) that the 2027 auction will be held in India. This decision comes after the franchises raised concerns about logistical challenges if the auction were to be held overseas, as was the case last year in Abu Dhabi.

The final venue for the auction will depend on the availability of hotels and accommodations for the teams and officials. With India’s wedding season running from October to December, finding enough five-star hotel rooms may be a challenge. The BCCI requires over 100 rooms for two nights during the auction.

Another important topic to be discussed in an upcoming IPL Governing Council (GC) meeting is the future of the Impact Player rule. Introduced in 2023, this rule allows teams to substitute one player during a match, similar to football substitutes. However, it has been criticized by players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who believe it disrupts the game’s balance.

Most franchises have opposed the rule, stating they built their squads without it in mind. They suggest that if the rule is removed, it should ideally be deferred until next season to allow teams time to adjust.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are currently the defending IPL champions, having won the 2026 title by defeating the Gujarat Titans in the final.
