Sudip Gharami: A Mason’s Son Rising in Cricket
Bengal cricketer Sudip Kumar Gharami is attracting attention with his impressive performance in the Ranji Trophy this season. The right-handed batter scored 133 runs in Bengal’s opening match against Delhi, continuing his strong run in domestic cricket.
Behind his success is a story of hard work, family support and determination. Gharami comes from a financially struggling family, and his journey to becoming a professional cricketer was not easy. His father worked as a mason and found it difficult to afford even basic cricket equipment for his son.
Despite these financial challenges, Gharami’s father continued to support his dream of becoming a cricketer. His decision was not always understood by others, and some people questioned why he was investing his limited income in his son’s cricket career. However, he remained determined to give Sudip a chance to succeed.
During his childhood, Sudip and his family lived in a simple mud house. His father played an important role in his training and development. He took Sudip to cricket practice every day and helped him improve his batting by throwing balls to him in the evenings. He also encouraged his son to practise shadow batting at night.
These regular practice sessions helped Sudip develop his skills and remain focused on his goal. His father’s constant encouragement gave him the confidence to continue working towards a career in cricket, even when the family faced financial difficulties.
Sudip began achieving important milestones as he progressed through the sport. His performances in age-group cricket, particularly at the Under-19 level, helped him move forward in his career. His success also enabled him to fulfil an important family goal by building a proper house for his family.
Gharami made his first-class debut in 2020 and has continued to establish himself in domestic cricket. He has played 43 first-class matches, scoring 2,745 runs, including nine centuries and 10 half-centuries. These performances have shown his ability to score big runs and contribute consistently to Bengal’s batting line-up.
Apart from first-class cricket, he has also represented Bengal in List A and T20 matches. Playing across these formats has given him opportunities to develop his game and gain more experience at the domestic level.
Although Gharami has not yet played in the Indian Premier League (IPL), his performances continue to keep him in the spotlight. His latest century against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy is another important achievement in his career.
Gharami’s journey shows how determination, regular practice and family support can help a young player overcome financial difficulties. His father’s sacrifices have played a major role in his progress, and Sudip continues to work towards achieving greater success in cricket.
For Gharami and his family, his cricketing journey is about more than runs and centuries. It is also a story of a father who stood by his son’s dream and a young cricketer who continues to work hard to make that dream come true.
