Toman Kumar’s Journey from Commando to Para-Archery Star
Toman Kumar, a former commando who lost his left leg in an explosion during an operation against Naxal insurgents, has emerged as one of India’s leading para archers. He is now preparing for the 2026 Asian Para Games in Japan, where he will represent India in the compound men’s category.
Kumar, who hails from Nawagaon village in Chhattisgarh, joined the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in 2017 and trained with its elite Commando Battalion. His life changed in 2021 when he suffered serious injuries during an operation, resulting in the amputation of his left leg. During his rehabilitation, he discovered archery with the help of coach Pankaj Singh, who recognised his potential.
Through consistent training and determination, Kumar gradually built a successful career in para archery. At the 2025 World Archery Para Championships in South Korea, he won the compound men’s individual title by defeating Rakesh Kumar, a Paralympic medallist. He also won a bronze medal in the mixed team event alongside Sheetal Devi.
Kumar continued his winning streak in 2026, securing gold medals at the World Archery Para Series events in Bangkok and Ahmedabad. These achievements helped him earn a place on India’s team for the Asian Para Games, where he will compete in the compound men’s category alongside Shyam Sunder Swami.
Kumar credits breathing exercises and meditation for helping him maintain focus and stay calm during competitions. Having already achieved success at the world level, he is now aiming for another major victory at the Asian Para Games. His journey highlights how dedication, mental strength and determination can help overcome major challenges.
