Kerala Judge Seeks Bail After Teen Son’s Fatal Crash
An additional district judge in Kerala has approached the Kerala High Court seeking anticipatory bail after his 17-year-old son was allegedly involved in a fatal car accident in Kochi. The incident has sparked public anger and raised questions about the police investigation and whether the case is being handled fairly.
The accident occurred in the early hours of October 25 in the Cheranalloor area of Kochi. A car allegedly driven by the judge’s teenage son struck a scooter ridden by Jayabalakrishnan, a 55-year-old man who ran a roadside eatery. The victim died in the accident while returning home after closing his business.
The teenager was initially released by the police but was later taken into custody again following protests by the victim’s family and local residents. He was subsequently granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board. The state government has challenged the bail decision, and the matter is awaiting further consideration by the court.
The judge, who owns the car involved in the accident, has also been named as an accused under the Motor Vehicles Act provisions relating to offences committed by minors. He has now sought anticipatory bail to protect himself from arrest while the investigation continues. The police have questioned him and are examining evidence connected to the incident.
The case has attracted widespread attention because of allegations of favouritism in the initial police response. The victim’s family has demanded strict action against those responsible and questioned whether the judge’s official position influenced the handling of the case. The family has also called for a fair and independent investigation.
Authorities have taken action against police personnel over alleged lapses in handling the incident. The investigation has been transferred to the Crime Branch, which is examining the circumstances surrounding the accident and the conduct of those involved.
The Kerala High Court’s administrative committee has decided to wait for further details from the investigation before taking any immediate action against the judge. Police have been permitted to continue their investigation, following the required procedures applicable to judicial officers.
The case has renewed public discussion about equality before the law and accountability in road accidents involving minors. The victim’s family is seeking justice, while the courts will consider the bail applications and other legal issues according to the evidence and applicable law.
The investigation and court proceedings are continuing, and the allegations against the individuals involved have yet to be finally determined.
