Cyclone Murasu Brings Heavy Rains to Chennai

The northeast monsoon has arrived in Tamil Nadu, bringing heavy rainfall to Chennai and several nearby areas. The continuous rain has affected different parts of the city, with some locations receiving more than 100 mm of rainfall within 24 hours.

According to data from the Chennai Corporation’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), Chennai recorded an average rainfall of 76.07 mm in the 24 hours ending at 6 a.m. on November 2. The rainfall figures show that northern parts of the city received some of the heaviest showers during this period.

Among the rainfall monitoring stations, 28 recorded heavy rainfall, while five stations reported very heavy rainfall. Parrys in the Royapuram Zone recorded the highest rainfall at 149.2 mm. New Manali Town followed with 141.6 mm, while Manali Ward 18 received 136.2 mm. Another monitoring station in Manali recorded 129.9 mm.

Several northern areas of Chennai experienced significant rainfall. Manali, Ennore, Kathivakkam, Tiruvottiyur, Madhavaram and Puzhal all received more than 100 mm of rain. The heavy showers in these locations highlight the uneven distribution of rainfall across the city.

Central Chennai also experienced heavy rainfall during the same period. Basin Bridge recorded 111.6 mm, while Cemetery Road received 102.6 mm. Ice House also reported substantial rainfall, recording 100.5 mm.

However, rainfall was comparatively lower in southern and southwestern parts of Chennai. Velachery and Medavakkam recorded 27.4 mm each. Neelankarai received 29.8 mm, while Sholinganallur recorded 34.4 mm and Uthandi received 34.8 mm.

The rainfall data shows a clear difference between northern and southern Chennai, with several northern areas receiving much heavier showers. As the northeast monsoon continues, residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and follow official announcements regarding rainfall and local precautions.
