Theatre Owners Struggle With ‘Jana Nayagan’ Revenue Share
Two major Tamil films, Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ and Sivakarthikeyan’s ‘Parasakthi’, are set to release soon and are creating a lot of excitement among audiences. According to theatre owners, ‘Jana Nayagan’ is attracting around 75% audience occupancy, while ‘Parasakthi’ is seeing nearly 80% audience interest in several centres.
Despite the strong audience response, theatre owners say they are facing financial difficulties. Tiruppur Subramaniam, President of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, spoke to Puthiya Thalaimurai about the challenges. He explained that the makers of ‘Jana Nayagan’ are asking for 75% to 80% of the theatre collections, which is putting pressure on cinema owners.
Subramaniam recalled that for Vijay’s earlier film ‘GOAT’, the revenue sharing was 75:25, which caused losses for theatre owners. He suggested that a 50:50 or 60:40 split between the producers and theatre owners would be more fair and practical for everyone involved.
The issue highlights the ongoing tension between high box-office expectations and fair revenue sharing between filmmakers and theatre owners, even when films are performing well with audiences.
