Dementia: Growing Global Challenge Affecting Millions Worldwide
Medical science has made huge progress in recent decades. Thanks to new
technology and innovations, doctors and researchers can now treat many
diseases that were once fatal. However, some conditions are still very
concerning, and dementia is one of them.
Dementia is a common disease that affects the brain. It happens when brain
cells are damaged or die, causing gradual problems with memory, thinking,
behavior, mood, and personality. The term “dementia” covers a range of brain
disorders that get worse over time. It is also one of the world’s biggest public
health challenges.
Currently, over 55 million people worldwide have dementia, and about 10 million
new cases occur each year. The number of people affected is increasing and is
expected to triple by 2050.
