FDA Approves Wegovy Pill, First Daily Obesity Medication
U.S. regulators on Monday (December 22, 2025) approved a pill version
of the popular weight-loss drug Wegovy. This is the first daily oral
medicine approved to treat obesity, offering an alternative to injectable options.
The approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gives
drugmaker Novo Nordisk an advantage over its competitor, Eli Lilly,
in the race to bring an obesity pill to the market. Eli Lilly’s oral
weight-loss drug, called orforglipron, is still being reviewed by the FDA.
With this approval, people struggling with obesity will soon have an
easier and more convenient option to manage their weight. Experts say
the pill could help millions who find daily injections difficult or
inconvenient. This move is also expected to increase competition in
the weight-loss medication market, giving patients more choices and
potentially driving innovation in obesity treatment.
