India faces second-highest global diabetes economic burden

A new study shows that India faces the second highest economic burden from diabetes, estimated at USD 11.4 trillion. The United States has the highest costs at USD 16.5 trillion, while China is third with USD 11 trillion.

Researchers from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and the Vienna University of Economics and Business in Austria calculated the economic impact of diabetes in 204 countries from 2020 to 2050.

The study highlights how diabetes is not only a major health problem but also a significant economic challenge, as the treatment costs and loss of productivity add up over time. Countries like India will need stronger healthcare policies and preventive measures to manage both the health and economic impacts of diabetes.
