“Tamil Nadu Nears Malaria-Free Status, Chennai Remains”
Tamil Nadu is making strong progress in fighting malaria. Over the past three years, 33 out of 38 districts in the state have reported no local malaria cases, bringing the state closer to eliminating the disease.
However, Chennai is still facing some malaria transmission. The city contributes to 37%–45% of all malaria cases in Tamil Nadu. The number of cases in Chennai has decreased from 173 in 2023 to 121 in 2025, showing steady improvement.
The state government is continuing its efforts through prevention programs, better treatment, and public awareness campaigns. These measures aim to stop malaria completely and protect the population.
If Chennai and the remaining districts achieve zero malaria cases, Tamil Nadu will be much closer to becoming malaria-free, which would be a major public health success for the state.
