WHO Calls for Better Diabetes Care Access

WHO South-East Asia Officer-in-Charge Dr. Catharina Boehme on
Thursday stressed the need for fair and age-appropriate methods
to prevent, find, and treat diabetes at every stage of life.
On the eve of World Diabetes Day, she said that diabetes, a
long-lasting health condition, is still a major problem in
South-East Asia. The region has over 279 million adults with
diabetes — about one-third of the world’s total — and many of
them do not know they have the disease or are not getting proper
treatment, she said.
“Only one in three adults with diabetes gets proper treatment in our
region, and less than 15% have their diabetes under control,” Boehme
added.
