28.3 Lakh Voters in Chennai District
The final electoral roll for the 16 Assembly constituencies in Chennai district has been released following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. With this update, the total number of registered voters in the district stands at 28,30,936.
According to the revised list, women voters number 14,64,344, slightly higher than the 13,65,763 men enrolled. In addition, 829 third-gender electors are included in the roll, highlighting continued efforts to make the electoral process more inclusive and representative of all sections of society.
The updated electoral roll was officially published on Monday by the District Election Officer and Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner, J. Kumaragurubaran. The Special Intensive Revision exercise was conducted over a fixed period during which eligible residents were given an opportunity to apply for new voter registration, request corrections in personal details, change addresses within constituencies, or seek deletion of names due to shifting or other reasons.
During the revision process, booth-level officers verified applications and carried out field checks where necessary to ensure accuracy. Political party representatives were also allowed to review the draft roll and submit objections or suggestions, as per the guidelines of the Election Commission.
Officials stated that the purpose of the SIR exercise is to maintain a clean, transparent, and updated electoral database. An accurate voter list plays a crucial role in ensuring free and fair elections, preventing duplication of entries, and enabling eligible citizens to exercise their democratic right to vote without difficulty.
Residents of Chennai district have been advised to check their names in the final electoral roll through the official website or by contacting their respective electoral registration offices. Those who find errors or whose names are missing can apply for corrections or inclusion as per the procedures laid down by election authorities.
The publication of the final roll marks an important administrative step in preparation for upcoming elections and strengthens the overall electoral system in the district.
