6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Kills Two in Mexico

At least two people were killed and 12 others were injured after a strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck southern and central Mexico on Saturday.

According to Mexico’s national seismological agency, the earthquake’s epicentre was located near San Marcos, a town in the southern state of Guerrero, close to the Pacific coast resort city of Acapulco.

In Guerrero, a 56-year-old woman lost her life after her house collapsed due to the strong shaking. Several buildings in the area were damaged.

In Mexico City, a 67-year-old man died after falling while trying to evacuate his building during the quake.

The state’s civil defence agency reported landslides in and around Acapulco and on several highways in Guerrero, causing travel disruptions.

As the earthquake struck, residents and tourists in Mexico City and Acapulco rushed out of buildings and gathered on the streets in panic. Emergency teams were deployed to assess damage and help those affected.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have advised people to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
