Air China Restarts Beijing-Pyongyang Flights
Air China, the national carrier of China, has restarted direct flights between Beijing and Pyongyang after a gap of six years. This move marks an important step in restoring travel and connections between the two countries.
The flights had been suspended in early 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, which led to strict border closures and travel restrictions. Now, with conditions improving, both sides are gradually reopening transport links.
Earlier this year, on March 12, passenger train services between Beijing and Pyongyang were also restarted. The return of both air and rail travel shows that ties between the two nations are becoming stronger again after years of limited contact.
North Korea’s national airline, Air Koryo, had already resumed flights on this route in 2023. With Air China now restarting its services, travelers have more options to move between the two capitals.
China continues to be North Korea’s biggest trading partner and closest ally. Trade, transport, and diplomatic exchanges between the two countries play a key role in supporting North Korea’s economy.
In addition to transport links, high-level visits have also taken place recently. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Beijing last September to attend a major military parade. This was a rare event, as it was the first time in many years that a North Korean leader took part in such a ceremony in China.
The restart of flights and train services is expected to improve business, tourism, and diplomatic relations between the two countries in the coming months.
