Army Animal Contingent to Debut at R-Day 2026
For the first time, the Indian Army’s animal contingent will take part in the Republic Day Parade in 2026. The contingent will march on Kartavya Path in New Delhi and will highlight the important role animals play in military operations, especially in difficult and extreme terrains.
The animal contingent will include two Bactrian camels, four Zanskar ponies, four raptors, 10 Indian-breed Army dogs, and six other military dogs currently serving in the Army. These animals are used in different regions and conditions, from cold deserts to hilly and remote areas.
The Indian Army said the specially designed animal contingent belongs to the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC). It aims to showcase how animals continue to support the Army in guarding the country’s borders. The contingent reflects a mix of tradition, modern practices, and self-reliance in military operations.
The parade column will be led by Bactrian camels, which were recently brought into service for operations in the cold desert regions of Ladakh. Through this display, the Army wants to honour the contribution of animals that assist soldiers in challenging environments.
