Ashok Leyland Starts EV Battery Plant Near Chennai
Chennai: Ashok Leyland, a leading truck and bus manufacturer, has officially started work on a new greenfield facility to manufacture electric vehicle (EV) battery packs at Pillaipakkam, near Chennai.
The company said the project will involve an investment of Rs 400 crore to Rs 500 crore. The new facility is part of Ashok Leyland’s plan to strengthen the EV ecosystem in India and support the growing demand for electric commercial vehicles.
According to the company, the facility will help localise the production of EV battery packs, reducing dependence on imports and improving efficiency in the supply chain. The plant is expected to create new jobs in the region and support local industries related to EV manufacturing.
This move is a strategic step for Ashok Leyland as it expands its focus on sustainable and electric mobility solutions. By producing battery packs locally, the company aims to make EV adoption easier and more cost-effective for fleet operators and businesses across India.
The company has not yet announced the expected production capacity or the timeline for the facility’s completion, but officials said work on the project has already begun.
