Bangladesh Asks UN for More Time Before Exiting LDC Status
Bangladesh has asked the United Nations for more time to finish its transition out of being a Least Developed Country (LDC). The country’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman wrote to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, explaining that Bangladesh is facing tough economic challenges and needs more time to prepare before moving past LDC status, which was set for November 2026.
The letter points out problems like rising import costs, limited foreign exchange, and global economic instability. It also mentions ongoing issues such as a weak financial system, high inflation, and slow growth. These are made worse by the long-term effects of COVID-19, climate disasters, and conflicts in energy markets.
Bangladesh is asking for a three-year extension to strengthen its economy, improve exports, and stabilize key economic indicators. Without more time, the country could lose important international support, such as duty-free access to global markets, which are vital for its development.
This request reflects a growing trend among developing nations seeking flexibility in应对 global economic pressures. Bangladesh’s request will now be considered by the United Nations, including its Committee for Development Policy, as the country aims to align its transition with long-term economic goals.
