Canadian Airlines Suspend Cuba Flights Over Fuel Shortage
Several Canadian airlines, including Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat, have stopped flying to Cuba because of a shortage of aviation fuel on the island. The airlines said there is not enough jet fuel available at Cuban airports to operate regular flights.
This situation comes as the United States has tightened restrictions on Cuba’s oil supply by blocking shipments from Venezuela, which earlier helped meet the country’s fuel needs. As a result, Cuba is facing serious fuel shortages that are now affecting air travel.
Air Canada said it will send empty flights to Cuba to bring back passengers who are already there. Over the next few days, these flights will pick up nearly 3,000 travellers and return them home safely.
The airline also said that aviation fuel may soon not be commercially available at Cuban airports, making it difficult for planes to refuel and continue normal services. Because of this, several flights have been cancelled or suspended.
The disruption has caused inconvenience for tourists and highlights the growing energy problems on the island. Airlines are closely monitoring the situation and will resume services once fuel supplies improve.
