Chennai to Launch Smart Parking System 2026
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to introduce a new smart parking management system at 20 locations across the city by the end of 2026. The project will be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model and aims to bring technology-based order to on-street parking in Chennai.
In July 2025, GCC ended its parking services contract with TEXCO. Since then, the city has been without a unified parking system, causing complaints from residents and visitors about haphazard parking, inconsistent fees, and traffic congestion in busy areas.
The revamped smart parking system will use digital tools to help drivers find parking spots easily, make payments seamlessly, and reduce illegal or disorderly parking. Officials said the system will also help authorities monitor parking areas in real-time and improve overall traffic management in the city.
The GCC hopes that the new technology-driven solution will make parking more convenient, organized, and efficient for both residents and commuters. Authorities are also planning awareness campaigns to educate the public on how to use the smart parking system effectively once it is launched.
With this initiative, Chennai aims to modernize its on-street parking and reduce traffic-related problems in crowded parts of the city.
