China Reasserts Claim Over Shaksgam Valley
China on Monday, January 12, 2026, repeated its territorial claim over the Shaksgam Valley, despite strong objections from India. China said that its infrastructure projects in the region are lawful and beyond question.
India had earlier, on Friday, January 9, criticised China for carrying out infrastructure development activities in the Shaksgam Valley. India stated that the area is part of Indian territory and said it reserves the right to take all necessary steps to protect its interests.
In response, China said that it has sovereign rights over the region and defended its construction projects. Chinese officials insisted that the development work is legitimate and does not violate any agreements.
The Shaksgam Valley, located in the northern part of the Ladakh region, has long been a disputed area between the two countries. The latest exchange has added to ongoing tensions between India and China over border issues.
Both sides have maintained their positions, highlighting the complex and sensitive nature of territorial disputes in the region.
