Congress Questions Clarity of India-US Trade Pact

The Congress party on Saturday (February 7, 2026) criticised the India–U.S. joint statement on the proposed interim trade agreement. The party said the statement does not clearly explain the details of the deal and called it “silent” on important points.

Congress leaders questioned what India has actually gained from the agreement. They suggested that the government has not shared enough information about the terms, benefits, or commitments involved.

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party said that “all the hugs and photo-ops have not amounted to much,” implying that personal diplomacy and public gestures have not produced strong results for the country.

The Opposition also used humour and film nostalgia to criticise the government. They quoted the famous Mukesh song “Dost dost na raha” from the 1964 movie Sangam, hinting that the friendship between India and the U.S. may not be as strong or beneficial as presented.

The remarks come amid political debate over India’s trade negotiations and the government’s foreign policy approach.
