Dalit Doctor Dies by Suicide After Marriage Refusal

A 23-year-old Dalit woman, who was working as a house surgeon at the Government Medical College in Siddipet district of Telangana, allegedly died by suicide after she was cheated by a senior resident doctor who had promised to marry her, police said on Monday.

According to the police, the young doctor was in a relationship with the accused, who later refused to marry her. The refusal was reportedly based on caste differences, which left her deeply distressed.

On January 3, upset over the situation, she allegedly injected herself with a herbicide inside the medical college hostel. She soon fell unconscious. Her roommates noticed her condition and rushed her to a hospital in Siddipet for emergency treatment.

As her condition worsened, she was later shifted to a government hospital in Hyderabad. Despite treatment, she died in the early hours of January 4, officials said.

Following a complaint filed by the victim’s sister, the police registered a case against the accused doctor. The case has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The police have arrested the accused and said further investigation is underway to look into all aspects of the case.
