GCC Plans Better Coordination to Protect Roads

For many years, Chennai residents have complained about newly laid roads being dug up again within days, causing inconvenience and poor road conditions. To address this long-standing problem, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has decided to enforce better coordination among various government departments that frequently carry out road-digging work.

The civic body’s decision comes as it prepares to re-lay more than 500 pending roads out of the 3,000 roads identified for improvement under different schemes such as TURIP, NSMT, TUFIDCO, and the GCC’s capital funds. The total estimated cost of this work is ₹486 crore.

According to GCC officials, the pending road works will cover both major bus routes and interior roads across the city. Special attention is being given to roads damaged during the northeast monsoon. To fix potholes caused by heavy rains, each zone in the city has been allotted ₹1 crore.

For repairing damaged interior roads, zonal-level officials have been given budgets ranging from ₹25 lakh to ₹30 lakh for each division. Officials said that zonal authorities are currently identifying roads on bus routes and interior streets that need urgent repairs.

Once the roads are identified, funds will be allocated and tenders will be issued for the work. The GCC hopes that with better planning and coordination between departments, newly laid roads will not be damaged soon after completion, leading to smoother roads and fewer complaints from the public.
