Government Acts Against Fake Universities Nationwide

The government has said that twelve fake universities running in the country since 2014
have now been closed.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar
said that 24 fake universities are still operating. He said the Central government and the
UGC have asked the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories to take legal action
to shut these universities and take necessary steps.

Dr. Majumdar explained that maintaining law and order is the responsibility of state
governments. He said FIRs have been filed against several fake institutions and universities.

He also added that show-cause notices and warnings have been issued to unauthorized
institutes that were giving invalid degrees.
