Governor Refuses Speech, Walks Out of Assembly
In a fresh clash between the Raj Bhavan and the Congress-led Karnataka government, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot refused to read parts of the customary address to the State Assembly on Thursday and walked out of the House.
The incident happened at the beginning of the Budget session, when the Governor was expected to deliver the official speech outlining the government’s plans, policies, and priorities for the year.
However, Gehlot objected to certain portions of the speech prepared by the government. These sections mentioned the controversial G RAM G law, which replaced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) framework.
The Governor said these paragraphs appeared to promote the government’s views and felt they were more like propaganda. Because of this, he chose not to read the full speech. He read only the first two lines and then left the Assembly.
The unexpected move created dramatic scenes in the House and highlighted the growing tensions between the Governor’s office and the state government.
