Greenland PM Rejects Fears of US Takeover

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has dismissed fears of a possible US takeover of the island, despite repeated interest from former US President Donald Trump. Nielsen’s comments came after Trump expressed interest in Greenland, calling it strategically important for US defence. This came just days after a US military operation in Venezuela led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.

Denmark and European allies have also warned about the serious security risks and supported Greenland’s sovereignty. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, meaning it governs itself in many matters but remains part of Denmark.

Speaking at a press conference in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, Nielsen said the situation in Greenland cannot be compared to Venezuela. He emphasized that Greenland is a democratic country and reassured citizens that its sovereignty will not be compromised.

Nielsen’s statements aim to calm concerns over foreign interest in the island and affirm that Greenland’s political and territorial independence will be maintained, despite its strategic significance in global defence and Arctic affairs.
