Havertz Penalty Earns Arsenal Late Draw

Kai Havertz scored a late penalty in the 89th minute to help Arsenal secure a 1–1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match on Wednesday.

Arsenal had performed very well earlier in the tournament, winning all eight matches in the league phase. However, they fell behind soon after the start of the second half when Leverkusen scored from a corner kick.

Leverkusen midfielder Robert Andrich headed the ball into the net moments after halftime, giving the home team the lead. The goal put pressure on Arsenal, who had controlled much of the game but failed to score earlier.

As the match was nearing its end, Arsenal finally got their chance. Substitute Noni Madueke was fouled inside the penalty box, and the referee awarded Arsenal a penalty. Havertz stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick against his former club Leverkusen, bringing the score level at 1–1.

After the match, Havertz said it is always difficult to play away against Leverkusen and the team knew it would be a tough challenge. He admitted Arsenal did not play their best football, but said the draw was still a good result before the second leg. Havertz added that playing the next match at home with the support of their fans would be very important.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his team had the match under control for long periods but was disappointed that they could not score earlier. He also said the team lost control of the game briefly in the second half, which allowed Leverkusen to take the lead.

With the second leg still to come, both teams will now prepare for the decisive match, where a place in the Champions League quarter-finals will be at stake.
